Dear Earlsdon Methodist Friends,

We hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter below.  The weekly programme changes slightly every week, so don’t miss out!  It’s half-term coming up, so there is a special children’s activity with ‘Mr Noah’ on Wednesday and a change in date to 3IN1 Youth Club.  'Eco-Corner' brings you more ideas and we have an eco-meet online coming up this week.   Victor brings us another hymn from Charles Wesley and Lorna shares some background to another hymn we have sung very recently (below).

“At Will's Memorial service we sang a very old hymn 'Come thou fount of every blessing', (Robert Robinson 1758) which I hadn't sung for decades.  The second verse begins 'Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come.'  This has provoked some questioning about what this refers to.  The meaning of Ebenezer in Hebrew is 'stone of help'.

This is a reference to 1 Samuel where it is recounted that the Israelites had a really bad defeat at the hands of the Philistines and the ark of the covenant had been captured (chapter 4).  This was a devastating blow.  Sometime later, in chapter 6, the ark is returned.  In chapter 7 the Israelites defeat the Philistines thanks to the advice and wisdom of the prophet Samuel.  His faith and prayerfulness stand out in this story.  After this victory we read in ch.7 verse 12 that 'Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen.  He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us"'.

Perhaps we can be like Samuel and help others through our faith and prayerfulness.  I hope we can see that 'thus far the Lord has helped us' in our lives, even though, like the Israelites, things haven't always been easy.”  (Lorna W)

(*This hymn appears in our current hymn book (Singing the Faith 494) with slightly amended words.)

Caring for God’s World

Making my own cleaning products is a recent joy! This means I know what is going in them and I’m not buying more plastic bottles. Win – Win

(This can involve finding a few ingredients which are not always stocked in the cupboard, but if you ask me nicely, I can divulge my sources!)

In January I included a recipe for floor and general cleaner (5.1.25) and this week I share with you ‘Nancy Birtwhistle’s Toilet Magic aka Pure Magic’ Follow the link:

It’s great for removing limescale and as a disinfectant.
The magic combination is : citric acid, hot water, washing up liquid and tea tree oil.

If you do have a go, I would love to hear from you 😊
(I also have a DIY Dishwasher rinse aid- but that’s for another week.)

Woodside Fellowship
Last Tuesday, we enjoyed a very interesting talk by Rev Stuart Jennings about his experiences as a Chaplain at Warwick University.  We meet again on Tuesday, 25th February, at 2pm, when we have a change to our programme.  Instead of Relaxation as printed (which has been moved to later in the year), we are instead looking forward to a talk by Ray Williscroft, whom I'm sure you all know. This will be followed, of course, by a refreshing cup of tea and biscuits and lots of chat!  Our Earlsdon friends are always very welcome to join us.

Coventry Cathedral by Night

Thursday, 20th February, 18.15- 20.00

A chance to see Coventry Cathedral in a new way, after hours!

Unplug and unwind as you wander the Cathedral after hours and watch as Spence’s masterpiece sparkles at twilight.

We encourage you to put away any technology, maybe bring a book or simple craft if you wish, as you explore the Cathedral in a new and exciting way.

We will also have activities available to use as well as free refreshments.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details below) for our Sunday Service starting at 10.30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

Parking is available at the front & back of the adjacent Church Hall, accessible from Earlsdon Avenue South.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available after the service, please stay and have a chat.

Plan your journey:
Open Google Maps

Accessibility: Both the Church & Church Hall have level or ramp access, and chair lift access to upper floors. There are disabled access toilets in both buildings. The main worship area of the Church also benefits from a hearing loop. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10.30am, but when the music is led by our Worship Band, we have a few hymns &/or songs before the service starts. There is then a warm welcome from one of our Stewards. Church news & extra notices may also be given at this time. Our services are typically an hour long, with a mixture of hymns, prayers, bible readings and a sermon. One of our leaders will give the sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We finish with a final worship song before a final prayer is said. (Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.)

Getting Connected

Church Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, morning, afternoons and evenings.

Our groups include:-

  • Centenary Choir (alternate Mondays)
  • Tuesday Prayer Prayer & Reflection online
  • Tuesday Intercessory Prayer online
  • Wednesday Midweek Prayer & Meditation
  • Wednesday Worship (held fortnightly)
  • Dayspring Steel Band
  • 3 in 1 Youth Group
  • Wellspring Café
  • Prayer Shawl Ministry
Check out Church Groups and see if there’s one that you could join, or we can put you in touch with a small group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.
We hope that whoever you are, you will feel at home at our church.

Best Wishes
