Dear Earlsdon Methodist Friends,
 
September continues apace, new routines are established, plans are made and church life gets busy.  Our newsletter is getting full, reflecting this increased activity.

We share a letter from Revd Becki Stennett outlining future plans and new ways of working together with our partner churches in Coventry.  Church Council met yesterday and approved the proposal in this letter.
 
In the busyness, the planning and the activity, we continue to give time for each other, to reflect quietly on the work of God’s Spirit within us and amongst us.  In particular, we pause to remember with gratitude the lives of two very special and much-loved members who we have lost in recent weeks. It has been our joy and privilege to share in love and fellowship with David Cule and Ros Light.  Their lives have touched ours and we have walked with them on our journeys in Christ.

Church Family News and Prayer:

It was with shock and sadness that we heard last week of the death of our dear friend and sister Ros Light; sooner than most of us were expecting. Our love and prayers are with Kathryn, Felix, Ross and all Ros’ family. She was an amazing, gifted, vibrant, loving person, so full of life. She will be deeply missed.
There will be a service of Thanksgiving at EMC on Saturday 17th October at 11am. Her close family will gather at the Crematorium to say goodbye to Ros earlier in the day.

A message from Judith: Please may I thank you for all the cards (with such lovely wording), flowers and love you have showered upon me over the last few weeks.  And thank you for all those who were able to come to David’s Thanksgiving last Friday.  It meant a great deal to us as a family.  With my love, Judith

Paul Shufflebotham marks his 80th Birthday on Monday 21st. He will help us celebrate with him on Sunday by bringing some cake to church.

Lois would like to thank all the friends in our church family who have supported with love during recent days as Mum’s situation has changed. Your care has held me

Prayer Shawl knitters meet on Thursday

Mondays

Banner Group meets on Mondays at 2pm above Wellspring. If you love being creative with embroidery, design and sewing, speak with Gill W, Helen, Heather or Lynda.

‘Come and Sing!’ 7.30pm in Church fortnightly, taking a break in August. Next meeting on 28th September. This group is for anyone who loves singing- you don’t need to read music!

Monday Evening House Group meets fortnightly and next on 21st September
 
Tuesdays

Intercessory Prayer Group meets weekly on zoom at 11am. Speak with Lorna or Helen if you would like to join.

Evening Bible Study and Fellowship Group meets fortnightly, at Ray’s, next on 29th September (then 6th October with regular fortnightly meetings thereafter)
 
Wednesdays

Worship Band meet for rehearsal in church, 8pm. The next meeting is 30th September.

Macmillan coffee morning
Next Friday, 25th September, will be our Macmillan coffee morning in Wellspring. Also a stall selling cakes, plants and preserves. DONATIONS OF CAKES AND PLANTS VERY MUCH WELCOME – bring with you on the day or leave in Wellspring on Thursday.  Come along between 9 and 2, enjoy a hot drink and cake in the coffee shop then take home edible treats and bargain plants.
  
Eco-Space – Caring for God’s World

We have a working party this Saturday 19th September from 10am.

If you can come along to help, we would love to see you there. Gardening gloves and any tools you can bring would be useful. The plan is to cut back and remove growth as needed in the early autumn to make way for a lovely garden space. (Free tea and coffee in Wellspring for all volunteers!)
 
Another eco-cleaning step…

My green journey is slow and sometimes feels like a step forward and a step back. This week however I had another little victory making cream cleaner – to use in the kitchen sink, bathroom etc. It was remarkably easy and I found all the ingredients in local shops

You need:
200g (7oz) bicarbonate of soda (found in hardware stores)
70ml (3oz) vegetable glycerine (I used glycerine from the Chemist shop)
A few drops of oil for perfume (optional)
A glass jar to store

Mix all the ingredients well and transfer to the jar.
Use a small spoon to put cleaner onto a cloth – and off you go. It works!!

Shoe Box Appeal

It is that time of year to think about the T4U Shoe Box Appeal for children who have nothing. The appeal is asking for the same items as previously with an extra request for games/items for boys aged 12 years. At a time when there is so much misery for children around the world it is a chance for us to make a small contribution to children's happiness & a reminder to them that others do care.
We will be packing boxes on Monday October 12th so gifts & financial donations will be very welcome from September. They can be brought to Wellspring or to Wendy Winch or Gill Spokes.
Suggested items for the boxes are woolly hats, scarves, gloves, stationery items, small toys & games, soft toys (Not home knitted), tooth brush, tooth paste, soap etc.

The Flower Ministry
Richard Lawn has provided the attached update on the Flower Ministry, including the 2026-2027 list of donors. Our thanks to Alison and Richard for this valuable ministry.
 
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

I have been asked to take over the DBS role for the Church.
This new role is going to take some setting up as we do not have access to the records of the previous holder of the role. This means I have to start from scratch. I am presently trying to put together a list of everybody in our Church community who is required, by Methodist Conference, to need a DBS to be able to perform their office or role. 
The list of people needing a DBS to enable them to complete their role is huge so I may, almost certainly, be chasing members of our congregation who are not aware of this requirement.

WOODSIDE CHURCH FELLOWSHIP

We meet again this coming Tuesday, 22nd September at 2pm - Following our successful fund-raising coffee morning earlier this year, a member of the Salvation Army is coming to talk about their history.  We will also be encouraged to sing at least one of their songs/hymns with the aid of a tambourine!  (Please note that this is slightly different from the notices last week.)  Come and join us!
FUTURE DATE:
On Tuesday, 13th October our own Christine Short will be giving her postponed talk about Hedgehogs and the danger of their extinction. (This talk was postponed in the summer due to the very hot weather.)
 
All our meetings finish with a refreshing cup of tea (with biscuits).
Our Earlsdon friends are always very welcome.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello 

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details below) for our Sunday Service starting at 10.30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

Parking is available at the front & back of the adjacent Church Hall, accessible from Earlsdon Avenue South. 

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available after the service, please stay and have a chat.

Accessibility: Both the Church & Church Hall have level or ramp access, and chair lift access to upper floors. There are disabled access toilets in both buildings. The main worship area of the Church also benefits from a hearing loop. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10.30am, but when the music is led by our Worship Band, we have a few hymns &/or songs before the service starts. There is then a warm welcome from one of our Stewards. Church news & extra notices may also be given at this time. Our services are typically an hour long, with a mixture of hymns, prayers, bible readings and a sermon. One of our leaders will give the sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We finish with a final worship song before a final prayer is said. (Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.)

Earlsdon Methodist Church aims to provide a safe & welcoming environment in which children can be themselves & have fun learning about our Christian faith. Please see our Sunday Services page for more information on Sunday morning groups for children.

Current mid-week groups available for children are as follows:

  • Prayers & Bears – every Wednesday morning (term time only) starting at 8.45 am. This is held in the church & is open to parents & carers with pre-school children.

Church Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, morning, afternoons and evenings.
