A Double Celebration!

outside left Reduced+LMargin2150 years ago, Earlsdon village comprised eight streets. There was no church of any kind, no doctor and no school. In 1873 a group of Wesleyan Methodists began worshipping together in a disused ribbon factory in Cromwell Lane (now Berkeley Road South). A school was begun in the same building. That Methodist Church community began its life of worship and service.

In 1884 the first purpose-built church (above) was opened (now the Criterion Theatre). The day-school moved with them. Together spiritual and educational needs were being met for the people of Earlsdon.

EMCoutside left (2)+R margin50 years later, 1923, the church we all know on the corner of Earlsdon Avenue and Albany Road was opened. We will be celebrating the Centenary of this church, and 150 years of Methodism in Earlsdon, in many ways.

It is our heartfelt wish that you will celebrate with us; help us to be thankful for our history and help us plan for our future service to the people of Earlsdon (no longer a village!)

To start a year of special events there will be a service of thanksgiving on Sunday 30th April at 10.30am to which everyone is welcome. The following day is the May Day Earlsdon Festival where we will be unveiling a unique display of materials, photographs and memories gathered from those who have been part of the life of the church or whose families have recollections that precede living memory. This will be in the church where there will also be activities for children, while in the hall we will be continuing the Methodist tradition of serving excellent tea and cakes.

Later in May, on Saturday 20th there will be a barbeque outside the church featuring free food and performances from the several steel bands that are associated with the EMCoutside right front+L margichurch. Then in June, from 24th to 2nd July, there will be a Floral Festival exhibiting displays from community groups and individuals from all over Earlsdon. A Magic Show with Supper is planned for 8th July. In October there will be a 1923 Film Night and in November a musical evening will take place, again featuring performers from throughout the local community. Other events including a concert by a male voice choir, a ceilidh and our annual Christmas Tree Festival are still being finalised and everything will be promoted through ECHO so that everyone can join us.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details below) for our Sunday Service starting at 10.30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

Parking is available at the front & back of the adjacent Church Hall, accessible from Earlsdon Avenue South.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are available after the service, please stay and have a chat.

Accessibility: Both the Church & Church Hall have level or ramp access, and chair lift access to upper floors. There are disabled access toilets in both buildings. The main worship area of the Church also benefits from a hearing loop. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10.30am, but when the music is led by our Worship Band, we have a few hymns &/or songs before the service starts. There is then a warm welcome from one of our Stewards. Church news & extra notices may also be given at this time. Our services are typically an hour long, with a mixture of hymns, prayers, bible readings and a sermon. One of our leaders will give the sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. We finish with a final worship song before a final prayer is said. (Sometimes there is an opportunity to receive prayer at the end of the service.)
